I Made A
Mistake! (And Why You Should Make Them Too)

Hey, I made a mistake!
I goofed...
I think I made a mistake...
I screwed up!
How many times have you seen these engaging openers used as the subject
lines of emails?
And how many times have you actually clicked to read the mails?
Quite a number of times, no doubt.
There is something about making mistakes and correcting them in our
culture. We love to see others make mistakes. As long as they are not
happening to us.
How can you turn mistakes into actual learning and selling points?
Mistakes can be a great way to express your sincerity. I'm not suggesting
that you go out and make all of them right now on your website, but...
No one will want to make mistakes intentionally!
So realizing the mistakes you have made, admitting and then correcting
them is a great way to get your sincerity across. Instead of simply
covering them up and saying it's not your fault. Or worse still, even
telling the person who pointed it out that it's THEIR mistake.
Why are email subjects with "I made a mistake" or "I goofed" are so
compelling?
That's because they're sincere and straight from the heart. They create a
sense of curiosity in the reader's minds - What mistake did he make? What
is he going to do about it?
A few weeks ago I received an email from one of my readers. He pointed out
a few spelling errors I made on my website.
I corrected them immediately and thanked him for his email. I'm grateful
to him for pointing them out because otherwise, these errors would have
gone unnoticed for a very long time.
Usually I tend to write so quickly that I overlook certain nitty-gritty
details. It is not only until someone points them out that they start to
surface. And it's not easy to have someone who bothers enough to send you
an email.
Don't dismiss any mistakes. Always turn them into learning points.
Leverage on the experience they provide.
Then figure out a way to change them into something positive, be it a
selling point or a way to get your readers interested.
Learn from your mistakes today so you can avoid making them tomorrow.
Most importantly, be thankful for them!
