Sometime
back one of my friends was asking for a money making opportunity.
I told
him that since I did not know what he was good at, I'm going to suggest
one of the 2 most fundamental skills that anyone can possess.
Reading
and writing.
That's
right. Many people are taken aback when I tell them that "reading and
writing" will actually bring them more riches and more good things than
they can ever imagine. They expect some kind of "quick fix" instead.
But truth
be told, every single "quick fix" in the world will not work if you do not
have the ability to read between the lines and express your thoughts at
the fastest speed possible.
Reading
means being able to understand the hidden meaning, and capture all nuances
of the written word. More importantly it is essential that you can read
fast, such that you can process more information within a shorter time
span.
Many
years back I took the effort to teach myself "speed reading". And to date
this single skill has given me much more opportunities than I can ever
imagine. For those of you who have not yet picked up speed reading, you
are missing out a great deal.
On the
other hand, we have the ability to write quickly. With more people turning
to technology, it is absolutely essential that we accustom ourselves with
the keyboard and learn to type, fast! And just like everything else,
practice makes perfect so keep trying until you are good at it.
I write
on the computer at a speed of approximately 1500
words an hour. As compared to many, that is a reasonably fast speed.
However, many are surprised when I tell them I have never enrolled myself
in touch typing lessons of any kind.
All I
merely did was to start typing, using one finger at first and eventually
getting accustomed to using all 10 of my fingers.
One of my
killer typist friends, Terence, has never attended a day of touch typing
classes in his life. He told me that his ability to type quickly comes
from years of self practice.
Another
living proof that practice makes perfect.
